Irohamatsu Pine Street

Alongside the middle moat, 47 Tosa pine trees were chosen and planted, because their roots don’t come up through the earth; they don’t prevent people and horses from coming and going. The street was named Irohamatu after 47 old Japanese alphabets ‘I, Ro, Ha’, and also called Matsu-no-shita(under pine trees). The lords used to pass through this place from and to Edo(Tokyo).
