Serigumi Kumiyashiki, foot soldier group houses

A Hikone clan’s foot soldier had a salary consisted of 132kgs of rice annually, and lived in a group outside the outer moat to protect Hikone Castle. Nakayabu group was established in 1606, Seri group in 1617. Later, 8 groups behind Kawahara, Kiridoshi-kami-&shimo group and Daiunji group were also established. No one knows when the Naka and North groups were established.
Straight lines of streets were avoided for strategic reasons.
The house of Seri group was the largest, 300ms (north-south) x 750ms (west-east). Some foot-soldier houses still exist. As they are privately owned, no entry is allowed without a reservation.
