Nanamagari Buddhism Altar Street

Nanamagari(seven curves) is a winding street on Hikone-do from Takamiya to Hikone Castle, near Seri River. Shops making Buddhism altar, Hikone’s traditional industry, stand side by side. All parts of Hikone Buddhism altars are handmade by seven types of artisans, such as wood artisans making the body of the alter, and wood artisans making the central-palace. Others include wood-carving artisans, lacquering artisans, artisans using gold leaf, artisans using lacquer and gold powder to make pictures, and artisans working with decorative metal fittings.
