Smith Memorial Church Hall

Smith Memorial Church Hall near the Castle moat was built in 1931 by Percy Smith, pastor and English teacher, with the help of Shosuke Miyagawa, a carpenter. Its appearance shows temple-and-shrine construction, but its interior has symbolic patterns of Christianity such as grapes and crosses on a beam and a door.
After it was once demolished in 1996 because of road-broadening construction, a group of Hikone citizens and Shiga University staff bought and rebuilt the hall. They had an event to celebrate the completion in accordance with the 400-year anniversary of Hikone Castle, a National Treasure. Now the Smith Memorial Church Hall is open to the public.
