A walk past the stately Hikone Castle is made even more impressive
by the beauty of Lake Biwa.
Built over 400 years ago, Hikone Castle has long been a part of Japanes
culture. Standing on a hill is the three-story main castle tower-now
designated as a national treasure-and many sub-towers called yagura
or turrets, which have been designated as important cultural assets.
The double moats retain their original air. Frequent visitors to Hikone
Castle are struck by how its appearance to change with the four seasons.
Sometimes splendid and other times dignified and serene, the castle
is always impressive as it stands tall amidst the beautiful natural
surroundings.
